Extravagant Eye Patches?

I found a post on BellaSugar today called Trend Alert: Extravagant Eye Patches..there were pictures of Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga & Solange wearing really cool eye patches. I especially loved Lady Gaga's pink heart...That would have been a good patch for Princess :) Here's the link. Don't Give Up Patching, PLEASE!!!

To all of you parents out there that are dealing with the day to day struggles of patching please don't give up. I know first hand how hard patching is. I've cried many tears when my son would rip of his eye patch and throw it on the ground. But if you give up on patching then your giving up on your child. Sooner or later your child will realize that they are not going to get their way and will hopefully just keep the patch on because they are tired of fighting with you. You have to be stronger than them for their own good. As kids they don't understand why you are making them wear this, but as adults they will love you for it when they know how much you went through to help them. Stay strong.

Joshua's Dr. Appt.

Well Joshua went to see Dr. McKeown on Monday at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute for his check-up and I'm very happy to say that he is doing great. Dr. McKeown even said that he might be able to stop wearing his glasses soon. Josh wears his glasses because they have a prism in them which keeps his eyes straight. I'm happy to say that they have been doing a great job so far. He doesn't go back until Febuary 2010 unless we see any changes in his vision.

Great Website For Active Patching/Computer Games

This is a great website for kids where they can do active patching by wearing their eye patch and play computer games. Don't forget to make sure that their eye patch gives them 100% occlusion (no light gets in) so they are getting the best of patching time. http://www.eyecanlearn.com/

Tips For Getting An Eye Patch Off Your Child

Sometimes patching isn't the hardest thing for the child, instead it's getting the sticky patch off at the end of the day. So I wanted to post a few tips on getting an eye patch off without taking the skin off as well.

1- About and hour before you take off the patch rub a little vaseline around the outer rim of the patch to help it loosen up.

2- You can also put your child in the bathtub or shower with the patch still on and let them bathe and the steam will start to loosen it up and then take a warm washcloth and put it over the patch for a few minutes and that will help.

Or you can start with the vaseline and then do the washcloth also.

I have found from all of my years on support groups reading that this is the most successful way.

It is a really great way to know that you are not alone in your struggle with patching a child.

Have A Patching Party In Your Child's Classroom

When your child has to wear an eye patch during school hours the best way to do that is to confront it head on. Go into the classroom yourself and talk to the children about why your child is patching. Let them ask you questions about why the patch is needed and how it will help to strengthen your child's eye so that they will understand.

Then when that part is over hand out a plain sticky patch to each child in the classroom and have them decorate it for your child. (Make sure they wash their hands first.) By having each child do this then they will feel like they are part of your child's recovery process. Then bring them home and each day have your child wear a different patch to school that one of the classmates decorated. You can also bring a box of little toys/candy and each day that your child comes in with a patch on let the child who decorated that patch have one from the box. It's a really cute way to get the whole class involved. Then if someday they end up having to wear an eye patch they will already know what to do. I hope this helps.
